FFSS Internship (Spring) Week 14
Hello! Here is this week’s update on my internship with the Florida France Soldier Stories project:
Since my last update, I have been largely focusing on editing the rest of the Stafford Rimes biography, which I have been given after it was edited by the project supervisor. My task is to fill in any gaps in information that I had originally when writing it in the fall 2024 semester. To do this I am using the book that was written by historian Samuel de Korte, who we connected with last year as a result of the project in HIS4150.
The work to insert the missing information is not difficult, however I have mostly focused on reading the parts of the book that I will need to fill in this information instead of immediately inserting the information without understanding what I am writing about. Much of the information that we are missing from the biography comes from the "Military Service" section, because of the lack of sources or information available about the 452nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, in which Stafford served. There is a large section of time missing from our information, specifically August 1944-January 1945. The work by Samuel de Korte has written about this gap in time, so I can now use it to fill in our gaps. As a result, most of my time dedicated to this internship this week has been me reading the book to digest the missing information, and I have slowly been inserting it where it needs to be.
I am so glad we connected with de Korte and found this work, it will really round-out the biography, which is already fantastic, if I can say so myself. This book is the first of its kind in research about the 452nd AAA, so I am learning so much about the unit as a whole as I read it to fill in the information. We had so much information on Stafford Rimes in the "Early Life" and "Legacy" sections, because of the wonderful efforts of his niece who the project has also connected with. However, filling in the information in the "Military Service" section has really made this biography robust. I cannot wait for it to be published, and for the Rimes family to be able to read it!
Until our next meeting on Wednesday (4/22), I will be working to fill in more of the missing information in the "Military Service" section, and I will also be preparing for the Internship Showcase which is next Friday (4/24)! I look forward to discussing what I have done this semester with the project, especially since what I did this time was a little different from what we did last time.
See you next week!
