FFSS Internship (Spring) Week 11

Hello! Here is this week’s update on my internship with the Florida France Soldier Stories project:

Since my last post before spring break, I have been continuing to work on editing my assigned biography for the rest of the semester's task. I have worked through most of the content within the biography, and this editing is mostly concerned with rewriting certain historical narratives that the original student mentioned, but may not have fully elaborated on. This has mostly been within the "Military Service" section of the biography, because previously, the "Early Life" section had been worked on by a graduate student, so I did not need to edit that section much. In my editing of the "Military Service" section, however, I had run into a slight bump in the road.

In this section, there was a brief note from either a graduate student or Dr. Lyons (we could not figure out for sure who wrote it since it has been a long time since the semester it was written in originally) that mentioned a certain place that the soldier was temporarily buried in upon his death. This note was confusing to me because I could not find any other information that connected this soldier and his unit to the area he was temporarily buried in before being moved to his permanent resting place. I brought this up in our biweekly team meeting yesterday, and we all worked through it together to figure out how to address bringing this element into the narrative.

After some quick research from the project manager, we figured out that his unit may have been in the surrounding area, but not quite in the area we discovered he was temporarily buried in, and that he was likely buried there because it was the closest (either) hospital or burial area to where his death occurred. After this discussion, we devised a way for me to work this element into the story without it seeming unnaturally placed when it was not previously mentioned in his service history. It is especially in moments like these that I am so grateful to work with a team that is helpful and more knowledgeable than I am in this specific realm of history so that we can work together to build a polished narrative that fully represents the soldiers' stories.

Now I am confident that I can add this part in and continue working to finish editing the biography's "Legacy" section, which needs some help in being more robust since the soldier was African American and we otherwise do not have a lot of detailed information on his service due to the nature of the US Army and available sources about African American soldiers at that time. I will be able to tie in the knowledge I gained and used during my original biography from when I took Dr. Lyons' HIS4150 course to complete this section. Until the next meeting in two weeks, I will be working on finishing this editing process to send to the project supervisor for review.

See you next week!
