Bicentennial Exhibit Development Internship Week 8

Hello! Here is this week’s update on my internship with the Bicentennial Exhibit Development project:

This week saw our first major deadline in the project: the gallery space floor plan! Since last week, we have been working to finalize our object list and create our floor plan for the physical space that the exhibit will be displayed in. After finalizing the object list, I created the floor plan in Procreate (on my iPad), which was modeled after the current 4th Floor Gallery space in the UCF library. During our team's tour of the gallery space a few weeks ago, we decided that the current floor plan in that space would nicely fit our exhibit and there would be no need to alter it from what it already is. The current gallery space has a great flow throughout the cases' positions, and it allows space for any accessibility needs like wheelchairs, crutches, canes, etc. The floor plan I created also included a key that detailed each label on the exhibit floor plan cases. To accompany the floor plan, I also updated the object list to include the floor plan case labels so that you can look between the floor plan PDF and the object list PDF and see what individual items and "mini themes" each case will display. Overall, I am very happy with how this deliverable turned out, and I know that the graduate supervisor is satisfied with it as well (because she told me)!

Also, I completed and delivered my midterm evaluations on the other undergraduate interns that I am leading in this project. Being responsible for feedback on two other people seemed like a nerve wracking idea at first because, as simply another undergraduate student with just slightly more responsibility, I felt a little unqualified to be evaluating them. However, it was a great experience and learning moment in this internship! The part I enjoyed was being able to provide comments on how great both interns are doing so far, and how great the project is coming along with their hard work!

On Wednesday, the Public History Central internship cohort took a field trip to the Hannibal Square Heritage Center in Winter Park, FL. We were given a tour by the Center's manager, Jasmine, who is a current UCF graduate student in the Public History MA program! The Center is dedicated to showcasing Winter Park's historic African American community from Hannibal Square and "west Winter Park." We got to learn a lot about what it is like to manage a center like this, and the challenges that come with being part of a smaller history institution compared to something more medium-sized like the Orange County Regional History Center. I enjoyed seeing all of the exhibits currently on display at the Heritage Center, and I really enjoyed listening to their chief historian speak about the collections and the creation of the Heritage Center.

Our next tasks in the Bicentennial project are to create the digital component proposal/timeline and to draft our narrative texts and object labels!

See you next week!
