FFSS Internship (Spring) Week 5

Hello! Here is this week’s update on my internship with the Florida France Soldier Stories project:

This week (as well as the next few weeks) is entirely focused on finishing the Primary Source Packets for the presentation of the podcast assignment for Dr. Lyons' EUH-3451 course. The assignment presentation will need to be ready by February 24, so our deadline is approaching quickly!

I have worked on six packets so far, and I believe most of them are ready (if not very close) for their final versions. The latest packet that I worked on especially needed a lot of editing from its previous state, so this has taken the majority of my time this week. The packet is a truly heartbreaking story of two brothers who fled Germany in 1938, moved to New York with their family, and were killed in service after being drafted to fight in France. This narrative is so unique to the packets so far, and we are committed to making sure it is polished for whichever student receives it for their assignment. I have put a lot of work into this packet, and it is stories like these (and all of the stories we tell, of course) that bring me out of the "editing mindset" to reflect on the overarching mission of this project as a whole. It reminds me of the importance of historical work and the extensive research that our team does to get these end products that are so important and impactful.

On Wednesday, our meeting consisted of going over the packets that have been worked on since our last meeting. We discussed formatting issues that we have run into, as well as discussing editing changes that need to be completed to specific elements of the packets we are assigned. Although we edit the packets very closely to a format we created for this semester, we are realizing that often we have to slightly change the formatting to fit new ideas about the packets. Since this part of the overall project is still new (only introduced last semester), there is still a lot to figure out along the way! It is all part of the process though, which is great experience for me to be a part of.

For now, our packet editing process continues! These blog posts may seem repetitive, but this part of the project should be over soon after our deadline is reached on the 24th. After that, I think we will be able to focus on editing biographies before the semester is over.

See you next week!
