Bicentennial Exhibit Development Internship Week 6
Hello! Here is this week’s update on my internship with the Bicentennial Exhibit Development project:
This week had some great experiences/developments! First, I will discuss the field trip that the Public History Central team went on:
On Wednesday, we had our field trip to visit the Orange County Regional History Center! When we first arrived, we were introduced to two employees within two different departments at the History Center, which included someone who worked in collections, and someone who worked in public programming. They each spoke about their paths to finding their positions at the History Center, and they gave us valuable insight into this field of work. The positions are very different from each other, but they overlap in some ways. Working in collections includes, of course, working to house and acquire items for the collection, which includes physical artifacts and materials, but also other not-so-physical things like conducting oral histories for the collection. Learning about this department in the History Center provided me with a better idea of what someone in this position does in a regular day's work, which was interesting to learn. I have more of an interest in the public programming side of working in a place like this, so I was very excited to learn about what someone in that department does in a daily setting. Learning about how that department works to create events, workshops, activities, and overall public engagement with the History Center was so fascinating to me, especially since this is the route I would ultimately like to go down in my career in History/Public History.
After our conversation with the employees, we were given a tour of the History Center by a volunteer docent (who happens to be a UCF student that created a Primary Source Packet that I edited for my other internship with Florida France Soldier Stories!). Our tour was very fun, and I enjoyed being able to see the History Center and its exhibits for the first time! I had be meaning to make my way to the History Center at some point, but this field trip was a great opportunity to both visit the museum, but also learn more about what it means to work at a museum. Overall, this field trip was great, and I am grateful for the opportunity to go!
On Friday, I had a meeting with the other undergraduate interns to solidify our object list and gallery space plan for the Bicentennial Exhibit. This meeting went very well, and we accomplished so much! I am very happy with the ideas we came up with, and I think that it will make for an overall wonderful exhibit for the Bicentennial collection. We had a lot of great ideas about the "mini themes" that we will be incorporating in the gallery cases, since we needed 8 total separate ideas. There will be 4 stories within long cases, 2 stories within short cases, and 2 stand-alone mini miscellaneous cases that will include seemingly "random" yet themed items. Our outline of the objects and gallery space looks great, and I sent it to our graduate project supervisor for review. Hopefully, we will be able to have a full team meeting (with the interns and graduate project supervisor) to discuss our outline and to begin our next steps of drafting the narrative text.
See you next week!
