Bicentennial Exhibit Development Internship Week 5

Hello! Here is this week’s update on my internship with the Bicentennial Exhibit Development project:

This week saw great progress for the project's development! On Wednesday, we (the team) were able to go into the University Archives and Special Collections to view Dr. Crepeau's items housed at the Library. This collection includes different items from the collection housed in his office in Trevor Colbourn Hall, and we will be using both collections to build our exhibit. In the archived collection, there are many items related specifically to Florida and the Bicentennial, such as Disney socks, a telephone directory book, posters, advertisement booklets, etc. I believe that these items will tie in perfectly with our theme of the Bicentennial on the local level in 1976. We will look at the overarching themes of national Bicentennial as it is unavoidable with the overall narrative, but we will focus on Florida specifically because that is where UCF is and where the collection was created.

Our time in the Archive was important for everyone's overall understanding of how building the exhibit narrative and themes will work going forward. We came up with general "mini themes" such as household items, local to Florida, UCF and Dr. Crepeau, etc. that we will focus on when drafting the narrative text and labels for the objects.

On Friday, I met with the graduate supervisor for the project to discuss updates and necessary next steps for the development of the project. Our discussion was mostly centered around what our ideas are looking like and how we will be implementing them into the "deliverables" of the next few weeks. It is around the time where we need to be selecting preliminary objects for the exhibit and to begin drafting narrative themes and text. I will be sending an email out to the other undergraduate interns to set up a time for us to brainstorm these ideas and to create a rough draft of what the exhibit will look like. We were given the measurements of the display cases that are in the Library 4th floor gallery, so we can also visualize how these items and their labels will be displayed in the physical space.

For the next few weeks, this is the general process that we will be leading, so the next updates will be very exciting! I am looking forward to seeing it all come together soon, and I can already tell that the exhibit will be great.

See you next week!
