FFSS Internship (Fall) Week 9

Hello! Here is this week’s update on my internship with the Florida France Soldier Stories project:

Over the weekend, I finished editing the two biographies that I was assigned to standardize before sending them to the Colmar Pocket Museum in France. It took a while to get them both more uniform and standardized within the template given that they were created by two different students, but it was an enjoyable process. The most challenging part of the process was making sure every source that we could find was included, and inserting any sources that the original packet did not have. This allowed me to do the type of research that I did for my biography for Stafford Rimes in the Fall 2024 semester, which I continue to do while editing the biography for this internship. This assignment combines that research process, and learning the skill of editing which I have become accustomed to over the course of this internship.

In the background, I have also been included in the panel for the upcoming Florida Historical Society conference on October 24, where I will get to speak about my experience doing research as an undergraduate student within HIS4150 and this internship. I am very excited and grateful for this opportunity, because this will be my first experience presenting at an academic conference. I have presented research before, but it was for my ongoing Honors Undergraduate Thesis in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship poster presentation in July of this year, so the experience will be much different. Dr. Lyons informed me that our panel will be more casual compared to what would be expected in an academic conference, and I feel that this experience will allow me to learn what this process looks like, since it is something I wish to continue after my time as a undergrad.

On Thursday, I had a meeting with Dr. Lyons to discuss our upcoming panel for the Florida Historical Society conference. We are presenting on October 24, and each of us will speak about our experiences engaging with primary sources. Because there are so many perspectives being shared- a university professor, an elementary school teacher, a graduate student, and an undergraduate student, the panel will present a great opportunity for the audience to hear a diverse approach to the topic. Each of us will have around ten minutes to speak about our section of the panel, and mine will include the experiences I have had in HIS4150 and the FFSS internship, how these skills I have developed can translate to other experiences, and learning how to engage with primary sources is so important as an undergraduate to develop vital skills for future research. For the rest of the weekend, I will be working on my slides within our panel presentation to prepare for the conference next week.

See you next week!
