FFSS Internship (Fall) Week 8

Hello! Here is this week’s update on my internship with the Florida France Soldier Stories project:

This past week has been a continuation of the Colmar Pocket Museum source packets from HIS3600. Since my last post, I have been checking the student submissions for the source packets to make sure all of the links are correct, the sources are credible and are the correct person, and that they are ready to be polished for the museum. For the most part, the ten packets I was assigned to review contained a good amount of sources that established a solid foundation to the packets, with only a few exceptions. The majority of the "errors" within the packets are links that do not connect to the correct place, or that the descriptions of the sources are wordy or hard to understand. There were a few that definitely need a good amount of editing and polishing, but they still presented good information that should be utilized within the final packets.

Many of the students were able to find and include unique sources that I did not come across in my experience with the Florida France Soldier Stories project when I took Dr. Lyons' HIS4150 course in the Fall 2024 semester. I always enjoy seeing sources that I consider unique, because it creates an opportunity to learn more about how this research can vary depending on what soldier you are assigned, and what their background is, as provided by these sources. Some soldiers do not have an abundance of sources on their individual experiences in service, which is often the case with African American soldiers. Otherwise, this is usually not the case and the secondary sources have to do a lot of the "heavy lifting." I enjoy seeing the effort of the students that truly enjoy this type of research, even if they are doing it for the first time. Conducting historical research can have that effect on undergraduates, which is how I ended up here!

For Wednesday's meeting this week, we combed through all ten of the packets I was assigned to go over, which led to discussions on how to move forward in the editing process before sending some of the packets to the Colmar Pocket Museum. After going over potential missed sources and incorrect links, as well as speaking about the formatting and descriptions used by students, we decided that I would take two of the packets and work to polish them by the beginning of next week to send to the museum. This is my newest assignment for the weekend, which includes standardizing the packets, including any missed documents, and clarifying the narrative element to the packets' source descriptions. For the rest of the week and weekend, this is what I will be doing. This work requires a good amount of time within my hours that I commit to the internship, but hopefully I will have some time next week to work on the biography I am editing for my internship as well.

I should have some updates on the packets I am editing and information regarding the packets being sent off to the museum by next week's update.

See you next week!
