FFSS Internship (Fall) Week 7
Hello! Here is this week’s update on my internship with the Florida France Soldier Stories project:
This week has shifted focus a bit from the biography that I am tasked with editing to the source packets from Dr. Lyons' HIS3600 course. Since our meeting last week, I have been working on my ten assigned packets to make sure everything looks correct, all of the links work properly, and that all of the sources that are available are included. I have made my way through all ten of the packets to do an overview, and I have been recently working on checking the citations, links, and that they have included as many sources as possible.
Anticipating our meeting this coming Wednesday, I have made sure to check every detail on the packets to prepare for discussing what is potentially missing and what we can do to improve the standardization of the packets in the future, before we send them to the Colmar Museum in France. I have made a separate document listing all of the types of sources within each section (Early Life, Military Service, Legacy/Post Service Life), which helps me stay organized when clicking through tens of sources per packet.
I find myself surprised with the amount and types of sources that some of the students have found within their short three week project. There are definitely some impressive packets with wonderful pockets of sources that really showcase how unique each soldier's story is. It is amazing, as well, to see some of the pictures that the students have found of their soldiers. I feel as though finding a picture of the soldier always connects the students to their experience researching the soldier in a deeper way, by putting a face to a name outside of the piles of sources about their life. Although, not all students have this opportunity because sometimes you cannot find a photo, but there are always other ways to feel connected to the research.
Our next meeting on Wednesday will consist of us discussing the packets and going through each one to make sure we have checked everything before beginning to edit and standardize them. Then, we will be discussing a possible panel for the Florida Historical Society conference that UCF is hosting this year. We are potentially having a "multiple angle" approach, which I will learn more about in the meeting. This would be my first conference as an undergraduate student, and it is very exciting to potentially have a role in the Florida France Soldiers Stories panel, so hopefully I will be able to contribute!
Until next week, the work on the packets continues!
See you next week!
