FFSS Internship (Fall) Week 6

Hello! Here is this week’s update on my internship with the Florida France Soldier Stories project:

Since last week, I have made much more progress on the biography that I have been assigned to edit for this semester. After going through the biography initially, I figured that the largest amounts of editing need to be within the Military Service section, since there has been editing done to it by the team before I was assigned it. From there, I devised a way to make the edits onto my version of the document while still keeping the student's original work to not accidentally lose vital parts of the biographical narrative.

I came up with a highlighting and color-font system that allowed me to see where my new edits were and where the student's original work was, which works very well. Parts of the editing process are simple "clean-up" sections where I refine and polish the student's writing and other little things. However, in the Military Service section, there is much re-writing to be done due to the student leaving certain vital aspects of the narrative out, which could be due to time constraint or not being aware they were as important as they actually are. And that is okay, because it is my job to fix these things! I have made my way through probably a third of the section, and I am really enjoying the process. I will continue to work on the Military Service section until I feel it is in good shape before going back and refining the Early Life and Legacy sections that have been previously worked on by another editor. I am happy to be back to writing and editing a biography in this way, since it reminds me of my original work in HIS4150 for the Stafford Rimes biography. This type of work is very rewarding, especially when you finally see the entire biographical narrative take shape in a way that honors the soldier's life and sacrifices.

Most of this editing was done leading up to Wednesday (9/24) before we had another team meeting to discuss the HIS3600 Primary Source Packet project which was due for the students last Thursday (9/18). In the meeting, we discussed the submissions and began to go over what needed to be done, which led to the division of work to a graduate student and me. We were each assigned ten students' packets to refine, edit, and clean up for publishing. We established a more standardized way of formatting them so they are uniform before going to the Colmar Pocket Museum. For the next week or so, it is mine and the graduate student's job to go through all ten of our student packets and look for missing sources that the original student did not include, as well as checking citations, and letting Dr. Lyons know about potential connections to Ancestry.com accounts for personal photos or other such sources that would be good to include.

Between editing the packets, I will continue to work on editing the biography to make sure everything will be ready to send off to one of the other team members in the next step of publishing on the website.

See you next week!
