FFSS Internship (Fall) Week 2

Hello! Here is this week’s update on my internship with the Florida France Soldier Stories project:

Since my last post, the project had our first meeting of the fall semester last Thursday to discuss updates and further goals of the project moving forward. Because it was my first meeting with the team all together, Dr. Lyons mostly spoke about what occurred over the summer and how the project will be moving forward after our meeting. I enjoyed listening to Dr. Lyons’ recap of what she did in France over the summer with the project, and I am excited for what this means for the project in the future! I also thoroughly enjoyed listening to the team discuss individual aspects of their positions on the project as well as the graduate students’ work on their personal projects. I loved listening to the collaborative exchange of ideas from researchers, since this is something I look forward to doing in the future.

As for my position on the project from this point onward, I was told that I would be working on editing a biography from a previous semester, and I was given the name of the Veteran’s bio that I would be editing, however I think this may be subject to change because I believe that bio has been edited previously, so I am waiting to hear back about the status of that portion of my position. My other duties will include helping Dr. Lyons with her HIS3600 course, specifically with a project the students will be doing where they research primary sources to create a packet of information, similarly to what I did in the beginning of my research on Stafford Rimes in Dr. Lyons’ HIS4150 course (which led me here!). I am familiar with this process, so I am excited to get back into this type of research. I believe I may be working to create a sample packet for the class to use as an example for their projects, but I have yet to hear more information in this regard.

My “assignment” for the weekend and beginning of this week is to browse the “FFSS New Intern” digital packet sent to me so that I can become familiar with how the project works from the inside. I have looked through the packet to see the general layout of how the editing process works, as well as revisiting the methods we use to gather the information detailed in the biographies. Once I have become familiar with everything once more, I will begin the process of editing a biography.

This coming Thursday, I have a meeting with Dr. Lyons to discuss my position further, so I will update next week on the progress I have made from that point forward. See you then!
